Shankri Devta Mela (fair) gets underway in Udhampur
Udhampur (Jammu), September 03 -The 3-day Shankri Devta Mela got underway in village Meer, in district Udhampur, today where thousands of people attired in traditional and colorful dresses visited the mela to offer prayers and seek blessings of their revered deity.
Additional Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, inaugurated the historic mela in the Shankri Devta Temple premises amidst beating of drums and full festivity.
Assistant commissioner, Mela Officer, Tehsildar settlement, officers of different departments and members of mela committee were present on the occasion. Shankri Devta temple is situated on a hillock in village Meer of block Panchari in a scenic spot which is surrounded by meadows, lofty mountains and lush green forests.
Youth Services and Sports Department, Udhampur organized rural sports competitions including Kabbadi, Tug of war, weight lifting events for the entertainment of people and also to expose the talent of students in culture and games.
Department of information also organized a scintillated cultural programme on the occasion which was highly appreciated by the audience.
The district administration has made adequate arrangements of drinking water facility, medicare, electricity, sanitation, transport etc. Different departments have put up their stalls at the site of mela. Local traders had also constructed their makeshift stalls.
J&K Indian Style Wrestling Association in collaboration with Local Dangal Committee also organized wrestling competitions during the first day of the mela in which famous wrestlers of different areas participated.
