| Diwali is a major and significant festival and is celebrated across the globe as the "Festival of Light," where the lights or lamps signify victory of good over the evil.
In India, Diwali festival is one of the most auspicious & grand occasion which is celebrated with great enthusiasm & warmth. Diwali is also called as Deepawali that means a line of lamps. Being the festival of lights, Deepavali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness; darkness refers to ignorance and light refers to knowledge.
Diwali is the day when Lord Rama & his wife Sita Mata returned after 14 years of exile. Lord Rama returned after the war that ended with the killing of the great demon and king of Lanka, Ravana. On this dark night of Amavasya, Ayodhaya was glowed up with rows of lamps to welcome king Rama.
So, on this auspicious day, the lightening up of lamps signifies happiness & end of evil. On this very day, Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the ocean of milk. Goddess brought wealth and prosperity for mankind. Celebrated joyously all over India, it is a festival of wealth and prosperity also.
On Diwali day, Lakshmi Pooja is performed in the honour of Goddess Lakshmi in the evening with the belief that Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth and good fortune, visits the homes of devotees on this day. The residential and business establishments are kept well cleaned & lit up to welcome her sacred steps.
