Raksha Bandhan festival celebrates the noble bond of love between a brother and a sister. The Hindi word Raksha means protection and Bandhan means to tie.
Traditionally, during Raksha Bandhan sisters tie a rakhi, a bracelet made of interwoven multi-colour threads, often adorned with stones and beads, around their brothers' right wrists to celebrate their noble relationship. While sister pray for their long life of the brother, the brother in return promise to protect sister from all that’s evil. At the end of the ceremony the sister offers sweets to the brother. Following this the brother gives her a return gift to mark the occasion.
Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon day (also known as Rakhi Purnima) in the month of Sravana in the lunar calendar.
In Jammu, Raksha Bandhan is also associated with Kite Flying. It is an important part of celebrations on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. Crowded rooftops with people playing loud music is a common sight during kite flying in Jammu on Raksha Bandhan.
