Janmashtami is one of the most popular festivals in Jammu celebrating the birth of beloved Lord, Bhagwan Sri Krishna, on the eighth day (Ashtami) in the month of Sravana or Savana. It is generally celebrated in the calendar month of August-September.
The festivities in Jammu begin during midnight, with the birth of Lord Krishna. This is marked by a lot of hymns, arti taking place and blowing of the Conch (shankh). The festivities extend the entire next day (Shri Krishna Janmashtami), and the entrances to temples in Jammu remain lined with footprints of the infant Lord Krishna drawn by devotees.
Various temples in Jammu began their celebrations by singing bhajans at mid-night and continue the entire next day. Devotees visit temples to have glimpses of the beloved Lord and get the pleasure of rocking the cradle of Lord Krishna.
In Jammu, Janmashtami is also associated with Kite Flying. It is an important part of celebrations on the occasion of Janmashtami. Crowded rooftops with people playing loud music is a common sight during kite flying in Jammu on Janmashtami.
