Vasant Panchami is a festival that has seasonal and social as well as religious significance. Vasant means spring and Vasant Panchami falls on the fifth day of the month of Magh. Vasant Panchami is the festival dedicated to Mata Saraswati, the Goddess of learning.
Goddess Saraswati
As an auspicious beginning to learning children are taught their first few words on this day to mark an auspicious beginning to learning. Places of learning/ education like Schools and colleges organise special worship of Goddess Saraswati. Saintly people worship Goddess Saraswati for spiritual enlightenment. People also worship the presiding deity of the family (Ishta Devata/ Devi) on this day.
Yellow color is given special importance on Vasant Panchami. Goddess Saraswati is dressed in yellow garments and is worshipped. Men and women wear yellow clothes on this day.
The God of love (Kamdev) is also worshipped on this day.
